There is an old wives' tale saying use toothpaste and that is an old wives' tale. What you need to use is a toothbrush. Toothpaste is very abrasive and it will actually scratch your jewelry. Most gold jewelry in America has either gold, rubies , sapphires, and some other stones like amethyst and citrine. If you have emerald , opal , or quartz you have to take special precaution. But how to clean gold jewelry , you are going think i'm crazy. Take household cleaner and toothbrush.

Clean it. It's just soap and water. Gold Jewelry is not affected by it. The Diamonds aren't affected by it and most gemstones and most jewelry on market today will not be affected in any way. All you are trying to do is clean it and it is just soap and water. So spray a little more, brush it with a tooth-brush , not a toothpaste. And when you're finished just rinse it off , take a paper towel and dry it.
